FAQs
-
How much do lessons cost? The charge for a 1:1 lesson is the same whether face to face or online. £30 for a half hour lesson, £60 for a one hour lesson.
-
Do you assess children before you start teaching them? The aim is to help your child feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible whilst they get to know me. It is likely they already feel anxious or lacking in confidence. Therefore, I do not immediately start our teacher - pupil relationship with banks of formal tests! There will be two 30 minute “getting to know you” sessions, where I will do informal assessments according to areas of concern/areas of need. There is no additional charge for these - the total cost will be £60. We will then agree an appropriate block of lessons - whether online, face to face and length of lesson.
-
How many lessons will my child need?Consistency and regularity is key. I am keen that children get into a routine, whether weekly, more often or less often. This will be agreed, following my advice, with student and parents. Generally, we might expect an initial block of 10 lessons, payable in advance.
-
What if my child is ill?I ask for minimum 24 hours' notice for expected absence, such as appointments or holidays. I totally understand that a sudden illness is not predictable and will allow one lesson missed per block.
-
What if they need a last minute lesson because of a sudden panic with homework for example?I will always try to accommodate requests if this is possible - whatever best helps your child.
-
Will you talk to their school/teachers?I am experienced in working with schools and liaising with a variety of professionals and agencies. I am happy to do so, as appropriate, in the interests of your child’s progress.
-
How can we book you? Please complete the enquiry section of the website. I will then call you for a 5-10 minute conversation discussing needs. If you would then like to proceed, we book a “parent consultation” phone or zoom call. This costs £30 per 30 minutes of discussion and advice.
-
Where are you based?I am 10 minutes outside Exeter, in a quiet, peaceful and very welcoming location. Meg, my reading dog, can be present during lessons if wanted, but doesn’t have to be if your child is unsure. My husband is a professional viola player, who has played on lots of films such as Harry Potter and James Bond, so your child may hear some music when they visit!
-
Do you accept other assessments?I am extremely experienced in interpreting and actioning diagnostic reports from other professionals and am happy to do so.
-
What do you offer consultancy for?Having been a Literacy Consultant, Literacy Coordinator, Head of Learning Support/ SENDCo, Head of English and Chair of Governors, within nine different schools, over 29 years, my specialism is organisation of SEND provision and cross curricular literacy development.
-
Have you much experience of success in inspection?I have worked within three departments and schools receiving Ofsted or ISI “outstanding”. My own teaching and departments have been 100% “outstanding”. I have also been a consultant for a secondary school in special measures, working within a team appointed to bring the school to a “good” rating within one academic year.
-
Would you offer one off visits or longer term support?I am flexible according to the needs of your school and available budget. I am likely to need time with your SENDCo, Head of English and Senior Management Team, to audit current provision, areas of need and to work together to decide on best routes forward to ensure excellent progress.
